Lipid Profile and A1c Screening
Lipid Profile Screening
It is recommended that healthy adults with no other risk factors for heart disease be tested with a fasting lipid profile once every five years. The sample is collected from a finger stick and results are available in 7 minutes. The profile results are total cholesterol, HDL (good), LDL (bad), VLDL, triglycerides, TC/HDL ratio (heart disease risk ratio), and glucose. The clients test results are reviewed with the nurse and informational brochures are available.
A1c Screening
The A1c sample is collected from a finger stick and results are available in 8 minutes. This screening tool gives a picture of the average amount of glucose in the blood over the last few months and isn’t affected by having eaten before the test. The goal of those with pre-diabetes or diabetes is to keep their blood glucose levels as close to normal as possible. This helps to minimize the complications caused by chronically elevated glucose levels, such as progressive damage to body organs like the kidneys, eyes, cardiovascular system, and nerves. Criteria for performing this screening tool would include a fasting blood sugar >100 mg/dl or a non-fasting blood sugar > 140 mg/dl.
