Functional Capacity Evaluation

What is an FCE?

An FCE is an objective evaluation of a person’s physical abilities and limitations to do general, work-related tasks. The physical ability is based on frequency and resistance of an activity during an 8-hour day and 40-hour week.

The FCE provides information on functions performed on many jobs to include the ability to lift or carry, push/pull, how much bending or rotating can be sustained, positional tolerance, hand coordination, balance, and mobility. This identifies critical factors in physical abilities or limitations.

The result of the evaluation is a thorough understanding of a person’s physical capabilities to do specified work tasks. It is standardized, it measures the overall physical function of an individual, and the information can be extrapolated to fit different scenarios and different occupations.

Our goals of this assessment are:

  • To assess the functional capability of an individual.
  • To interpret the findings in terms of strategy for return-to-work and safe work standards.
  • To assist in making accurate decisions regarding an early and safe return to productivity.
  • To assist in making objective decisions on physical limitations.

Each assessment includes:

  • A client history review
  • A musculoskeletal assessment to determine strengths and/or limitations in strength and range of motion
  • A functional activities performance assessment involving:
    • lifting and carrying
    • sitting, standing, and balance
    • bending and stooping
    • other work related tasks
  • An objective report which is prompt, clear, and concise
  • A conference can be arranged with client, employer, case manager and evaluator to discuss the FCE results.

This assessment is performed by an Occupational Therapist who is a vital element to the JobCare Team and is trained under the Isernhagen Work Systems.
