EMS and Firefighter Back Injury Prevention Program
As might be expected, EMS and fire fighters are at increased risk of back injury compared to other professions secondary to rigorous physical requirements of the occupation. The International Association of Fire Fighters' annual Death and Injury Survey reveals that sprains and strains routinely account for approximately 50% of all line-of-duty injuries and back injuries account for approximately 50% of all line-of-duty injury retirements each year.
- Approximately 8 of 10 Americans will injure their back sometime during their life
- 96% of back injuries are due to cumulative trauma
- Back pain is the most common and expensive work-related injury
- Back pain costs to the employee are immeasurable
JobCare's back program consists of educational and practical, ‘hands on' components.
Participants will learn basic spinal anatomy and the role of the intervertebral disk and muscular system during movement. Participants will also learn the importance of spinal alignment and the pressure to the disks in various awkward lifting postures. Core lifting techniques will be demonstrated and put to practical use during common patient evacuation scenarios.
